Integrating Safety Into Laboratory Design
Laboratory safety is often treated as a compliance or operational issue after a facility is designed and built. Still, many decisions that shape safety, compliance, workflow, and long-term flexibility are made much earlier in the project. This interactive roundtable will explore how to incorporate laboratory safety into planning and design from the outset, helping project teams identify potential issues before they become costly changes or operational challenges.
This roundtable session will use real-world scenarios, design dilemmas, and group discussion to engage architects, lab planners, laboratory users, clients, and other project professionals. Participants will consider when safety professionals and other stakeholders should be involved, how competing requirements can be resolved, and what questions should be asked before design decisions are finalized. Participants will leave with practical strategies and a framework they can apply to their own laboratory projects.
Learning objectives:
1. Identify common safety, workflow, and infrastructure issues that can be addressed during laboratory planning and early design.
2. Recognize when laboratory safety professionals, users, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders should be involved in key project decisions.
3. Evaluate potential conflicts between safety requirements, user needs, design goals, and project constraints before they result in costly redesign or construction changes.
4. Apply practical strategies for integrating safety considerations into programming, design review, and project decision-making.
