General Session #1: The Next Generation of Animal Research Facilities

Monday, April 23, 10:10 - 11:00 AM

Speaker(s): Josh Meyer, AIA

Room #: Liberty Ballroom A

Animal research facilities are going through a metamorphosis and almost everything is being rethought. Just a few examples of this market trend are the physical location within a building (basement or above grade); ratio of holding to procedure; natural light and view; automation; operating cost and per diems; flexibility; specialty housing (gnotobiotics, PDX); and the future of animal based research.

This presentation will examine the latest trends and issues and reveal some of the lessons learned along the way. The focus of this discussion will be a virtual tour of recently completed and in-design animal facilities that graphically demonstrate the metamorphosis if vivaria.

Attendees will learn:

· What is the impact of translational science & medicine on animal research facilities?

· Trends, issues and metrics related to animal research facilities.

· Creating animal research facilities that respond to the needs of researchers, staff and animals.

· Impact on typical laboratory building design from an operational, architectural and engineering standpoint.
